How to Join the Ranks of Best Places to Work

A positive corporate culture can improve the performance of an organization by as much as 30 percent, according to James L. Heskett of Harvard University. And one of the best ways to determine whether or not you have a positive corporate culture is what your employees say about what it’s like to work there.

best places to work Google, for example, has been in the top slot of the Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For for seven years in a row. This year they are followed immediately by Acuity and The Boston Consulting Group.

Even Slalom, who comes in at No. 100, can hold their head up high. They’re doing corporate culture right!

So what do all these great places to work do to make their employees so happy? Yes, it’s that somewhat difficult-to-define — and even more difficult to implement — thing called corporate culture.

Corporate culture embodies the beliefs and behaviors of an organization. It determines how the employees and management interact throughout the organization and with their customers and suppliers.

Whether or not your organization makes a concerted effort to develop and foster well-defined beliefs and behaviors, it has a corporate culture. The culture of a company develops organically over time driven by the example of its leaders and from the character of the people they employ.

The Harvard Business Review identifies Six Components of a Great Corporate Culture: Vision, Values, Practices, People, Narrative, and Place. The article is worth reading, but it will leave you wondering how to implement those six nebulous components in the right way.
