The oncoming rush of change will encompass more than just technology.

The world, its population and climate, the marketplace and its consumers will all demand new strategies, new leadership methods, and much more. Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity, the acronym VUCA, entered military vocabulary in the unpredictable 90s, accurately describing what most organizations already face. Our VUCA world has created the very real prospect that change is the only constant.

The research shows that 70% of change initiatives fail. So how do leaders lead change when dealing with the onslaught of complex challenges? Clearly there is a lot of work to be done to prepare leaders and their managers fully, but here I share just 4 leadership mindsets that must change.

  1. Embrace the fact that there are multiple internal and external causes to the challenges we face as leaders and organizations.
  2. A one-size-fits-all approach to solving challenges will need to be expanded to incorporate multiple solutions.
  3. Pioneer new practices specific to various environments, and fewer about incorporating best practices.
  4. Manage change fatigue as the world of work and life continuously evolves.

One way to help leaders navigate the VUCA world is to encourage deep discussion and create alignment about the specific changing landscape your organization is facing. What current and future trends are most relevant to address? How do we need to operate in a world of disruptive technologies and manage in a world of ever increasing globalization, deregulation, population growth, or enter new markets effectively?

In our Leading Change workshop, we facilitate a structured approach to this and other change discussions, ensuring aligned action to address the requirements on leadership and on how things must get done, now and in the near future. If you want to improve change leadership, then is workshop is right for your teams.
