providing essential performance feedback

It’s one of the most critical job of any leader.
Whether working with a colleague, direct report, or even with your boss, every manager needs to know how to provide feedback well.

Whether commenting on a peer’s idea, addressing the behavior of a direct report, or sharing a different viewpoint with your boss, delivering that message can be uncomfortable and maybe even intimidating. Some managers even find it challenging to deliver positive feedback, stating that they don’t want to come across insincere, or sharing that employees don’t need to be praised for just doing their jobs.

Providing feedback encounters many obstacles. Many barriers however are self-imposed. Help your leaders re-evaluate the 4 most common negative mindsets to providing effective feedback.

  1. Overgeneralizing that offering any thoughts is a bad idea instead of focusing on the positive outcomes that can be achieved for themselves and their teams when feedback is understood, accepted and acted on.
  2. Exaggerating the degree to which they predict the other person’s reaction to the feedback — an overly optimistic or pessimistic view.
  3. Amplifying the way they label the conversation as difficult instead of reframing it as, perhaps, non-confrontational or that they’re simply offering up an alternative solution.
  4. Embellishing or overstating how they might feel during the conversation as nervous, stressed, angry, or upset, instead of comfortable, relaxed, and with a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Let’s face it, giving and receiving feedback can be uncomfortable. To make it easier, your leaders can get better when preparing for feedback, learn to frame conversations in the right way, practice how to overcome push-back, and know how to close feedback with psychological safety.
