Tenacity in the Balance

Leaders who consistently make time for Reflection help not only themselves but also everyone around them. By reflecting on how you need to behave in order to get the best out of everyone, you will consistently make progress driving accountability and motivating engagement.

Reflection makes the difference between a well-guided team and organization and one that constantly gets tossed around on the tides of change. Like all Leadership Attraction Powers, you must carefully balance your use of Reflection.
Use this Attraction Power too much and you become withdrawn, distant, and unapproachable. When you fail to reflect, you can become compliant and easily swayed from your goals and convictions. Just the right amount of Reflection makes you a thoughtful leader.

Take the right steps now

It’s more than just important to incorporate Reflection into your hectic schedule. It’s essential. If you don’t take time to reflect, you can’t really get a picture of how you are doing and where you are going. Here are four steps you can take to make sure you make the best use of your Reflection time.

1. Find a Quiet Place to Reflect
Your Reflection time will go to waste if you try to accomplish it in the same environment in which you work. Your Reflection place should be literally quiet. If this means getting up earlier a few days a week and walking in a natural, quiet outdoor space, so be it.

2. Reflect on a Regular Schedule
Your brain likes habit. If it comes to expect a morning walk or an evening retreat to a quiet room, you’ll find that eventually those times will become more productive. Your unconscious mind will work in the background and unload wonderful insights at the regularly scheduled intervals it has come to expect.

3. Journal Your Reflections
In the onrush of everyday business, the last thing you want to do is lose the insights gained in positive Reflection time. Make it easy for yourself to jot down what you discover whether you record it with a pencil, pen, or electronically.

4. Repeat Reflection
Even though you come to surprising and delightful understanding in one or two sessions, those insights may fade unless you repeatedly remind yourself of their brilliance. Spend time not only on discovering but on working out how best to implement what you have discovered. Don’t let yourself forget. Repeat your insights. Make a mantra out of them. It’s the only way to make them a part of your being.
