Helanie on Horseback: Intimate Connections

Today I met Mel, the founder and head honcho of the Three Parks Spectacular Ride. He created this amazing tour more than 30 years ago. He has also played various parts in 31 movies. A quiet and caring character, Mel has given me the nickname “Panther Fast.” Mel’s son Justin has now taken over the company. They inspired me to reflect on intimacy as Justin shared with me what his Mormon faith believes about strong family connections—the family unit having […]

Helanie on Horseback: Create Awesome Experience

Yesterday I took the day off riding, but my knees did not want to cooperate. Instead of disappointment, however, I embraced a different kind of day than the one I had expected. We filled water tanks at a nearby farm, then I and a new friend drove quads up high on the Bryce Plateau. We got to experience spectacular views—snow and a beautiful red rock formation. My intention was to create an awesome experience for them. As I’m sure you […]

Helanie on Horseback: Thankfulness

On the second morning of our horseback-riding adventure along the border between Utah and Arizona, I rose and shot this short video. Hear the birds and the stream, but best of all the supporting silence. The perfect sensations of peace and quiet are having a rejuvenating effect on me. This panorama might give you a better idea of the breathtaking beauty I’m encountering every day.

Helanie on Horseback: Managing Millennials

As a boomer my research into developing and managing millennials is top of mind. Sitting here in Las Vegas, I realize we need to make space for millennials’ way of working. eagues do better than we boomers. Here are a few questions I asked myself this morning: Are you working with your Gen Y’s way of blending the lines between the traditional and modern clock? Are you making space for life within a predetermined work schedule? As you reflect on […]

Helanie on Horseback: Breathing stress away

Before we even saddled up and hit the trail, I met Kaja Michelson. She offers 15-minute Skype sessions at no charge in which she helps you relax, reduce stress, and master your physical, emotional, and mental state with proper breathing. I thought I knew how to breathe until Kaja spent a few minutes with me. Afterwards I interviewed her, so that she could give you the gist of what she has to say about breathing stress away. Now take a […]

Why and How Engagement Improves Profit

Our ongoing research consistently tells us that Engagement, one of the Six Leadership Attraction Powers, is the the lifeblood of coaching effectiveness. When leaders regularly engage employees in feedback in the form of reinforcement and redirection, they are twice as likely to report to researchers that they prefer to stay and work with that employer. Put the other way, they are twice as likely to leave if they don’t. Prompt and properly delivered positive recognition and corrective direction increase productivity […]

The How and Why of High Engagement

How many people work in your organization? If you answered with a percentage, such as, “About half,” then you understand the question. Let me put it this way, What percentage of your workforce is fully engaged? I’ve seen all kinds of numbers over the years bemoaning engagement percentages that hover around 30 percent. The “about half” quip, above, actually represents what I generally see as the percentage of those workers who have effectively checked out, who come to work to […]
